Job Description:

Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products, Inc., a Sumitomo Electric Group company, is looking for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist in our San Marcos, California office. This person will lead environmental health and safety (EHS) programs for Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products, Inc. (SEIP) to safeguard the health and safety of all associates, while ensuring compliance with company and government regulations. They will also be responsible for planning, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive environmental and occupational health and safety program to promote a safe working environment. They will provide direct support in the management of EHS by working with corporate, management, associates, contractors, and government entities. This person will report to the General Manager of Manufacturing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead and coordinate safety-related training programs, new hire safety programs, annual OSHA trainings, toolbox safety topics, and safety programs
  • Develop, administer and maintain the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) to meet laws, regulation, and polices set forth by OSHA, Cal-OSHA, and Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI)
  • Develop, administer and maintain the Environmental Program and associated procedures to meet laws, regulations, and policies set forth by OSHA, Cal-OSHA, SEI and other regulatory agencies.
  • Plan and coordinate emergency preparedness drills for evacuations, fires, earthquakes, power outages and other drills as needed
  • Maintain and update all required environmental health and safety records and documentation such as Forklift, Crane, HAZWOPER and HAZCOM
  • Support SEIP policies, procedures, and ensure compliance with Human Resources, ISO 9001, TS/IATF 16949, ISO 14001, OSHA 18001, and support future certifications.
  • Serve as SEIP's representative on matters concerning environment and safety with government officials, customers, and other interested parties
  • Support and integrate Sumitomo Global Safety Initiatives with local requirements
  • Assist Human Resources with management of injured workers cases
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Maintenance and Manufacturing to conduct Job Hazard Assessments to determine safe practices and personal protective equipment requirements
  • Track and report safety-related statistics, hours information and trend analysis reports
  • Develop and maintain an Ergonomics program
  • Create and distribute communication notices regarding safety-related issues
  • Support the management all environmental safety programs regarding city, county, state, and federal regulations
  • Help manage and ensure SEIP has all the appropriate annual/current permits and programs such as air pollution, hazardous waste, storm water discharge, Title 17, chemical or biological hazards, excess noise to meet the standards set by CERS, EPA-TRI, AQCR and RCRA
  • Assist with correspondences with Safety Regulatory Agencies
  • 5S Patrol Committee
  • Chair, manage and organize the 5S Patrol with the assistance of managers and/or supervisors for best practices and the overall improvement of the facility

  • Safety Committee
  • Serve as a member of the Safety Committee that provides monthly inspections and recommendations for a safe work environment

  • Safety Review Committee
  • Participate in all safety review activities regarding upgrades to equipment, new equipment and changes where employee will be required to operate in a different or new manner

  • Management Safety Patrol
  • Coordinate monthly management safety patrols through the site
  • Record and track identified items on patrol to find resolution via responsible departments
  • Maintain tracking spreadsheet

  • SEG Environmental Health and Safety Committee
  • Liaise and partake in discussions regarding health and safety development

  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certificate
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in EHS
  • Experience in California manufacturing environment working with Cal-OSHA requirements
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents and laws
  • Must have good computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to prioritize and work under strict deadlines

Preferences

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Certification or Formal Training in Safety, Occupational Health and Safety or other related field
  • 5 - 7 years in EHS Position
  • Experience with ergonomic improvement programs
  • Experience with product environmental reporting methods such as IMDS, RoHS, REACH, Conflict Minerals, and product content declarations

Special Position Requirements

  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as Safety Shoes
  • Must be able to participate in Radiation Safety Program
  • Up to 5% travel required. Travel may be out of town and overnight
  • This job operates in a professional office and manufacturing environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
