About This Role:

The Senior Automation Engineer researches, plans, designs, and implements production equipment and systems. Supervises and coordinates activities of engineering group including application, fabrication, assembly, startup, installation, and operation of this equipment. Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of multiple engineering projects.

Essential Job Functions/Tasks:

  1. Reviews project proposal or plan to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for accomplishing project, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project. Researches and analyzes data, such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application. Develops preliminary design concept including equipment layout and theory of operations using computerassisted design/drafting equipment and software. Uses historical information, prior experience, and engineering judgment to prepare quotations.

  2. Designs equipment including mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components, applying knowledge of engineering principles and automation technologies. Reviews design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer requirements, and related specifications. Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.

  3. Develops PLC programming for automation systems and can judiciously troubleshoot and resolve programming issues efficiently during debug before release into production. Programs 6-axis robots, motion control systems, and vision systems efficiently. Denso robotics experience preferred.

  4. Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget. Controls expenditures within limitations of project budget. Reviews project status and modifies schedules or plans as required. Prepares reports and records on project activities. Schedule project meetings as necessary for design reviews and to update project status. Manages smaller projects and provides real time communication on financial and scheduling statuses.

  5. Using knowledge of automated machinery and equipment, able to set up, operate, and troubleshoot machines, equipment, or systems to verify functionality, capabilities, and conformance to customer's requirements.

  6. Plans and formulates engineering program and organizes staff according to project requirements. Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project. Gives work directions, resolves problems, prepares schedules, and sets deadlines to ensure timely completion of work. Coordinates activities of group with related activities of other departments. Evaluates and improves procedures and practices for accomplishing group objectives. Monitors and analyzes costs.

Other Job Functions:

Perform other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Education/Training Required:

Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field, or equivalent work experience.

Experience Required:

Three - five years PLC experience, and seven years in design engineering experience in manufacturing machinery and automated equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):

KSA #1: Exhibit a positive, customerservice attitude that promotes a sense of cooperation while working in a team environment. Capable of interacting effectively with all levels of employees throughout the company as well as with external contacts. Ability to handle adverse situations tactfully.

KSA #2: Ability to develop equipment concepts using knowledge of automated machinery, equipment and systems consisting of mechanical, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and programmable control systems. Capable of accurately estimating and quoting costs for this equipment.

KSA #3: Able to plan and formulate engineering program, organize, and assign project staff according to project requirements. Ability to coordinate project team activities to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget. Capable of controlling expenditures within limitations of project budget. Able to evaluate project status and modify schedules or plans as required to meet commitments.

KSA #4: Able to design machinery, equipment, or systems, applying knowledge of engineering principles and automation technologies including but not limited to component feeding and orientation systems, indexing devices, pick and place systems, sensors, PLC and control logic, and pneumatic devices. Capable of reviewing equipment designs for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications. Ability to identify and resolve engineering design problems. Able to direct integration of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and logic devices into equipment systems. Capable of evaluating and approving design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.

KSA #5: Ability to draft and design mechanical components, subassemblies, and systems using 3D computer aided equipment and software. Able to create multiview component and assembly drawings.

KSA #6: Using knowledge of automated machinery and equipment, able to set up, operate, and troubleshoot machines, equipment, or systems to verify functionality, capabilities, and conformance to customer's requirements.

KSA #7: Ability to direct, plan, coordinate and schedule the functions and activities of the group. Capable of assigning staff to work assignments and projects, giving work direction, resolving problems, preparing schedules, and setting deadlines to ensure timely completion of work. Able to evaluate and improve procedures and practices for accomplishing group objectives.

KSA #8: Ability to travel, domestically and internationally. Must have or be able to obtain a valid passport.

KSA #9: Requires good verbal and written communication skills in English.

Physical Demands:

Ability to sit for extended periods of time to use the computer, to perform drafting activities and to complete paperwork activities. Intermittent walking to gain access to areas at the facility. Ability to climb stairs to gain access to upper-level work area.

Finger dexterity sufficient to use a computer, to use precision measuring instruments and to complete paperwork activities.

Visual acuity sufficient to use a computer, to read blueprints and plans and to update drawings.

Hearing sufficient to communicate with coworkers.

Work Environment:

Office environment with ergonomically designed furniture. Office setting and plant with temperature controls.

Wears safety glasses in designated areas in the plant.
