Job Description About Playable Worlds Playable Worlds is a team of talented and creative game industry professionals working together on a sandbox MMO built for the cloud. Led by Raph Koster (Ultima Online; Star Wars Galaxies) Playable Worlds offers a collaborative and diverse work environment, competitive pay and benefits, and an opportunity to create new kinds of gameplay and experiences in online worlds that feel real and engaging. All positions at Playable Worlds are currently remote, but we plan to open one office location in the future as circumstances allow. Summary As a VFX Artist for Playable Worlds, you will be responsible for creating unique visually stunning VFX and implementing these into the game. You will work closely with the Design team and Art team to share ideas, understanding the game---s creative needs, style guidelines, and technical options. Reporting directly to the Art Director, you will create and implement outstanding visuals and VFX that will bring our worlds, characters and enemies to life, e.g. fire, mist, steam, smoke, butterflies, shafts of light, weapons, scanners, magical moments, etc. Applicants must be able to provide examples of their work and a test may be required. Essential Job Functions Work directly with the Art Director, Design and Production departments to help bring life to the look and feel of the game. Lend your inspired creative ideas to visually solve game concepts and add juicy rewards for gameplay. Design, develop, and implement visual assets and VFX assets that are suitable for the game. Solicit feedback from the art team and the company to test and strengthen visual communication. Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirements Experience level: Must have prior experience in professional game development as a VFX artist, with 3 years working on VFX in a high-production capacity creating stylized VFX assets for characters and environments. Education level: College degree in Art, Design, or similar, preferred but not required. High proficiency level with Unity particle tools. High proficiency level with texture creation programs such as Photoshop, Krita, or Substance Designer. Creative and passionate about MMOs and fantasy worlds. Strong portfolio showcasing a good range of VFX skills. Self-starter, team-driven, and strong organization skills. Moderate level of proficiency with a 3D program such as Maya or Blender. Highly collaborative personality, using your creative energy to inspire and flesh out the vision with others on a team. Ability to prioritize a variety of tasks in a manner that enables timely completion. Bonus Points for Any of These Knowledge of the animation systems and other ways of making VFX in Unity, such as line renderers, decals, and shader magic. 2D concepting skills Knowledge of agile development practices and tools, such as Jira, Basecamp, Trello, etc., preferred but not required. Multi-player online experience. Shipped 1 or more games as a VFX artist. Location Playable Worlds is headquartered in San Marcos, California. All positions are currently remote due to the pandemic.
